Regardless of how real they seem, the past and future are just mental projections that act like wood thrown into a fire - either it creates suffocating smoke when it's fresh, uncontrolled flames when it's dry, or pleasant warmth when it is charred. Only when you linger in "Now" does wood turn into cold ashes that are blown in all directions by the wind of impermanence, making your life as light as fluff carried by the breeze.
