Recognition and Understanding

People can only access those words that are familiar to them, so their receptiveness to words is proportional to the richness of their internal vocabulary. But the extent to which they are able to penetrate the meaning of the words they receive will depend only on the level of consciousness they have reached. For this reason, even the most educated people can fall where some of the illiterate rise.

I tend to think that the educated person possesses more words in his vocabulary but may well have a more shallow receptiveness than the illiterate one. Experience and sensitivity are probably what makes the difference in the richness of vocabulary.
